Inspection before installation of floating oil seal

2025-04-22 17:07:26

1. Firstly, check the lip of the floating oil seal for any breakage, damage, or oil corrosion. If so, replace the oil seal with a new one.
2. Then check if there are any scratches on the shaft neck, especially if there are any longer scratches along the axial direction, and if the surface is rough. If there is any, the damaged area can be welded and re machined according to the specified journal size, or a new shaft can be replaced. If the shaft neck only has metal burrs or burrs on the shaft head, it can be smoothed with a file to prevent damage to the oil seal lip during installation.
Precautions for installation of floating oil seal
During the installation of the floating oil seal, the oil seal (especially the lip area) and the shaft neck area should be kept clean, and care should be taken not to let the self tightening spring of the oil seal jump out of the spring groove. If the self tightening spring becomes loose and its elasticity weakens, a section can be cut off depending on the situation, and the two ends can be securely connected before continuing to use.
When installing the skeleton oil seal with a floating oil seal, a special installation tool must be used to prevent the oil seal lip 121 from being stretched, deformed or scratched. If this tool is not available, you can follow this procedure for installation: first, roll a layer of transparent hard plastic film (commonly known as glass paper) around the shaft neck and even the shaft head, apply a small amount of engine oil on its surface, insert the oil seal into the shaft head wrapped in plastic film, apply even force to slowly push the oil seal onto the shaft neck, and then remove the plastic film. Attention: Do not install the lip in the wrong direction, it should face towards the inside where the oil is stored, and the side with the trademark and specifications should face towards the outside. Because lip 1:3 can only seal unidirectionally, if the oil seal is reversed, it will inevitably cause oil leakage, weaken or fail the sealing effect. To avoid tilting the oil seal or using tools such as hammers and sticks to randomly tap and hit the surface of the oil seal, otherwise it is easy to cause damage to the oil seal.
