On the practical use of the floating seal, one of causes forshortening the wear life is clogging of silt and sandgenerated in the space betweenthe seal ring and the O-ring inserted groove .Experiences show that the packing often occurs at theoperational sites of the silt and sand with high percentage offiner particle size.

In the condition as shown , the seal rings andO-rings are forced by the packing generated in the space sothat the pressing force which acts on the sliding band shouldincrease. As a result, the wear accelerates and the lifeshortens.
