Reasons for the failure of the floating oil seal

In most cases, the floating oil seal can be used normally for a long time, but it will also fail due to some reasons for design choice or installation.

1. The sealing surface load (contact specific pressure) is uneven or too large. Incorrect installation will cause this phenomenon to occur, causing leakage and burning of the floating seal ring.

2. Violation of installation requirements
Failure to operate as required during installation will result in damage and deformation of the floating seal ring, and cuts and tears of the rubber ring will cause failure. Impurities and debris on the sealing surface can also cause leakage. Therefore, the installation specifications must be followed carefully.

3. Internal pressure puncture
The floating oil seal can withstand varying internal pressures within the design range. Usually the internal pressure is lower than 1.0~1.7Bar, which can ensure a safe seal.

4. Inappropriate floating seal design
Because the floating oil seal must be combined with the floating seal seat to form a complete sealing system, the reasonable design of the floating seal seat directly affects whether the floating oil seal can work well. The design of the floating seal seat is best to refer to the design data provided by the floating oil seal manufacturer or the relevant standards of the floating oil seal, and be processed as required.

5. Use of unsuitable lubricants
Improper use of lubricating oil will cause premature failure of the floating oil seal. Choosing the wrong lubricating oil will make the rubber ring aging and lose its elasticity, especially under the combined action of heat, this phenomenon will be exacerbated. Inadequate lubrication and cooling can also cause the float seal ring to burn out.

6. Contamination coating
In many working environments, floating oil seals are exposed to ash and mud to work. These contaminants will accumulate and plate on the float seat, float ring and rubber ring. For a long time, the rubber ring will be squeezed out, and the contaminants will be repeatedly squeezed and finally penetrate the seal. For these applications, it is recommended to add maze or mask protection to the design.

7. Rubber ring wear
The rubber ring is easily worn by sand and other impurities, causing rubber degradation and tearing. The best way is to choose a wear-resistant rubber material.
